Harry
Price studied at Hereford College of Art and the West
of England College of Art in the 1950s, later gaining
an MA from Middlesex Polytechnic. Since retiring from
the School of Art at Coventry University he has devoted
himself to painting full time.
As an art student in the 1950s, Harry Price faced the
choice of going in either of two directions – one
of academic training allied to craftsmanship, and the
other promoting abstract expressionism. After practising
both, the tension between them still finds echoes in his
painting. When he was a student, watercolour as a medium
was hardly mentioned, yet Harry became captivated by the
delight of its translucency and fluidity.
Harry Price's awards include the Patchings Open Award
(RK Burt Prize) and the Royal Institute of Painters in
Watercolours (RI Award 2005). In 2006 he won the RI Winsor
& Newton Award for the most outstanding group of paintings
and wrote for the International Artist magazine.
